Khatarnak Movie Review:
What's it about
Dasu (Ravi Teja) is a good-for-nothing young hoodlum. One day he is kidnapped by a group of gangsters and they make him appear for 10th standard examinations. Their plan is to deploy him in the police force as their mole. The guide of the gangsters (Biju Menon) joins Dasu in a school where he falls in love with the drawing the teacher Nakshtra (Illeana). Once he wears the police cap, Dasu acts like the cop, which irks the head of the gangster (Lal). The rest of the film is confrontation between them.
Analysis
On paper the film’s storyline that a group of gangsters deploying a thug into the police force looks neat. The basic plot is undoubtedly copied from Korean movie, Mr Socrates, which itself is mediocre comedy-action drama. But the director Rajashekar mixes the storyline with some other borrowed scenes from various Hindi, Hollywood and Korean moves and incorporates songs in between.
Even if that is excused, the narration lacks punch and defies logic. Though it occasionally evokes laughter (cheap comedy), the film moves on without aim and proper screenplay. Choreographer turned director Amma Rajashekar’s first movie (Ranam) was successful because of its comedy and good songs. In Khatarnak, he fails in both the departments. Keeravani’s music is unoriginal. Two songs are just the rehash of the super hit songs from Ranam – Nuvvu Edikoste..adikoste Suvarna and Nammoddu..Adavallani Nammoddu.
The first half is big bore. Only in the second half the film gains momentum. But mediocre climax changes the film’s overall look.
Performances
Ravi Teja is in his elements as good for nothing guy. He wears wacky dresses and mouths double meaning dialogues that are aimed at masses. His histrionics and comedy might please the mass audiences. Whatever the name and fame that Illeana won in Devadasu and Pokiri vanishes with this film. She looks so vulgar. Even her performance is bad. Her character is just straight lift from Main Hoon Na. Main villain Lal and Biju Menon are okay. Kota, Brahamanandam, Ali, Venumadhav have done neat job. Prakash Raj as police officer is wasted.
What’s hot?
Some comedy scenes (dialogues by Maradhuri Raja) are good. To some extent second half is interesting. Basic plot line is good. Cinematography is neat. Editing by Kotagiri is just plain. The use of too many split screens is unnecessary.
What’s not?
Bad screenplay. Amma Rajashekar has bland taste about entertainment. His songs picturisation proves it clearly. He’s copied good basic plot from Mr. Socrates but he has failed to execute it in taut manner. Music is mediocre.
Bottom-line
All in all, Khatarnak is clear dud. Critically, it is avoidable film. Can mass audiences save the film? Lets wait and see.
